I still need to tweak a few things in the software before I give it a test cut but if it works out Ben will get on for his railroad also!

The bricks/mortor joints will have to be cut with an engraving tool. I am not sure how I can engrave the motor joints in the recessed area's without the body of the tool hitting the sides. I am also not sure how to approch the letters. I could engrave the area and then place the letters on top of skip the engraving and carve the leters into the portal as shown.

The engraving bit it a 1/4" V shape and it will only be cutting .001 or .0015 inches deep.

I will report back soon with the results.

Staging on the Main

I imagine most of you run trains on your main line but I will be staging them on mine!

If you have been following along you will notice I changed my staging once again. I wasn't satisfied with the swing bridge I built a few pages back, it was cumbersome and inconvenient. So back to back to the idea of using part of the hallway for a narrow staging shelf.

Instead of some arbitrary yard ladder for staging I decided to use the double track main line as it was laid out in the mid 50's. Closest to the hallway is the East bound main, in the middle is the West Bound main, and finally closets to the wall is the west bound siding.

Trains originating from Eckington Yard in Washington D.C. will be staged on the west bound main or the west bound siding. They will proceed up the west bound main as if they were coming from Eckington. Once past the cross over the train will back through the crossover onto the east bound main until it clears the branch siding switch. At this point the train will proceed west down the Georgetown Branch.

Only one train originated from the east. An early form of a unit train would arrive from Baltimore with a string of tank cars bound for the oil distributor near River Road. The train was an F unit and it would return light to Baltimore once the string of cars where delivered. This train will be staged on the east bound main next to the branch siding.

Since the main line is almost at eye level I decided to go with ME code 83 and I raised it approx. 3/16" higher then the code 70 on the branch tracks. The far end of the main line will be hidden behind a small hill at the end of the branch interchange tracks.

As you can see all the tracks are in place and wired. That will also be a facing point siding that goes to a background building along the backdrop.

Below is the basic layout for the "New Yard" area. The 2 tracks closest to the water (right) had a traveling crane over that spanned the two tracks with space in between for trucks. The next two tracks (middle) are team tracks placed 1.75" apart with space on both sides for trucks. Then main line tracks #1 and #2 (left).
Emily (far left) sites on the brewery siding.

I decided to leave out one other team track in the yard so the area was not over crowded and I would have space for vehicles.

Now back to building turnouts so I can get this track installed!!

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The first tool is a frog rail grinding jig.

You start by laying in two pre cut sections of rail and bolt the jig together. Then grind the rails on a disk sander.

Next remove the rails, flip them over in the jig, clamp, then solder.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The turnouts look great and operate flawlessly. At 17.00 each I can't see spending the time to hand lay track unless you need something other then #6's.

For now I still plan on using/reusing my hand laid turnouts in Georgetown. Almost all the tracks in Georgetown are buried in cement (plaster) so only the PC ties will be required and minute track details won't be missed.

With that in mind my previous hand laid turnouts needed refreshing and some extra PC ties add for track support so I built an assembly jig out of 3/4" MDF using a #6 ME turnout as a template. I milled 1/8" slots to the proper depth to hold the ties in place while assembling the turnout. The jig can accommodate both left and right hand turnouts.

Half a Tunnel ???

Something that has been bothering me for a while was the proxsimity of the Dalecarlia tunnel to the River Road sidings. On the prototype the tunnel was about a 2 miles from River road. On my model it is about 2 feet. That would place your train in the tunnel while switching the oil storage sidings in River Road.

So instead of trying to force fit the tunnel into this space lets see what it looks like if I eliminate the River Road side of the tunnel entrance all together. First lets cut off the Dalcarlia side of the tunnel face and save it. Then add a view block made from 3/4" foam. Lets use some scrap Masonite to temporarily form the front fascia. OK what do you think?

By doing this I gained about 16 inches on the River Road side of the tunnel. The opening in the view block can easily be hidden with trees and a few buildinds can be placed between the edge of the layout and the tracks. This should give the illusion of the train disappearing down the tree lined right of way as it leaves River Road, just as the prototype did.

Below is the Dalecarlia Side of the view block with the Dalcarlia Tunnel. I will have room to place a building flat against the foam divider to represent the rear of the Army Map building. That and a long winding set of wooden stairs down to a loading platform just outside the tunnel will set the scene.

Now when you sit in front of the railroad you really feel the separation between the two area's. Of course the valance will need to be remade but I think this is the best approach for now.

Dalecarlia Water Treatment Sidings

Today I completed the tracks and roughed in the scenery for the Dalecarlia water treatment plant. The treatment plant employed an overhead delivery system that carried materials several hundred yards away from the tracks. All of the overhead piping and supports will be scratch built. The only way I could see to simplify the area above the triangle was to go ahead with the node under. Staging will be moved to the very top level above Bethesda. E.C. Keys sidings will be placed as shown on the plan to keep operators on each level separated.

The node under will be a swing out bridge section that will fold into the front edge of the railroad when not in use. To hid the track when stored I have planned a removable Styrofoam section of scenery that will cover the bridge track when stored and be used as a filler when the bridge is deployed.

Bethesda Tracks - Part 2

Ben stopped by last week and we went over the plan for Bethesda. Ben has done extensive research on the branch line and his web site is loaded with great photo's and information. Stop over and have a look at http://sluggyjunx.com/rr/gb/

We agreed that the mock-up I had done in Bethesda looked good so this weekend I proceeded to install all the tracks, turnouts and wiring. Everything works well and Bethesda will be able to handle a lot of freight traffic in the near future.

This image is looking towards Georgetown. First up is the foam that will fill in around the support brackets and support the track and scenery.

I decided to try a less expensive route for the foam base. Instead of 4 inches of expanded polystyrene (blue or pink foam) I choose to start with 4 inches of the less expensive expanded polystyrene (white beaded foam).

To get the 4 inches I am using two layers of 2 inch foam boards. The fist layer is cut 3 inches narrower then the depth of the plywood base to provide a wire chase at the front of the railroad and glued to the plywood with liquid nails for projects.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; This arrangement would give the operators a chance to block cars heading to the staging tracks. The staging track closest to the backdrop could also serve as Silver Spring Yard and add a bit of interest to the switching duties of the trains heading for Georgetown.

A few mock up track layouts once the foam is in place will help me decide.

What Looks Good on Paper

What looks good on paper doesn't always look good in real life. I was and still am very pleased with the decks and helix I built a few months ago on the left side wall, however the upper deck on the right side wall has been bugging me to know end. It just didn't look right and I figured out why... Depth!

With the right side decks are 6" deeper then the left side decks. The overhanging upper deck completely cut off the view of the lower deck where Georgetown Yard will be located. After looking at it for a few months I decided to cut back the depth of the upper deck to 16 inches. I will loose some model space on this level but it will open up the lower deck to extra light and easier operation of the runaround tracks in the back of Georgetown Yard.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; When I decided to go multiple deck I devised a plan to hide all support brackets from sight. The way this works by placing the shelf brackets above the shelf. The front of the the shelf board is supported by 10/24" all thread rod. The rear of the shelf board is screwed to the 2x4 that is attached to the wall. In the next few photo's you can see I have achieved my goal and the results are fantastic!

More Construction

Thank you for all your positive comments on the Blog! After several hours I think I have hit on something.

I started be cutting a short section of double shelf standard to 4.25" with a single screw hole near the top. I placed an 18.5" bracket onto this short standard and gave it the old pull test! It turned out that it was extremely strong.

Next I tinkered with some drawings and came up with the idea below.

This gives the upper deck a clean underside I plan on running the wiring under the removable front valance or close to the front near the CFL lights. I built a test section with 2 brackets 32" apart and it is very sturdy.

This is what the underside of the upper deck will look like, very clean. I have decided to continue modeling the branch line by constructing a double deck model railroad.

The model will be approx. 100 feet in length and feature most of the major area's along the branch line. This will be a true point to point layout with no provision for continuous running. The Georgetown waterfront will now be modeled in its proper prospective, not mirrored as in the previous layout.

At this point I have a basic plan started in CAD. The room is 23' x 12 feet.

Lower level will include: Georgetown, Dalecarlia water treatment plant, Dalecarlia tunnel, and River Road.

Upper level will include: Bethesda, E.C. The map had all of the branch line and sidings at the time it was printed.
From their it was of to the internet where I found the home of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Historical Society. The Society hosts a Yahoo Group and the members are eager to answer your questions on a multitude of B&O related questions. Members have help me acquired track maps, drawings, and blueprints of the branch line as well as contributed a wealth of personal experiences and memories. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone on the group for their help.
After several months of inquires about the branch the society decided to publish a story of the Georgetown Branch in their quarterly magazine "The Sentinel". Much to my surprise the article filled almost the entire volume. It is an exceptional piece and contains numerous photo's and maps. If you wish to purchase a copy they can be found at the B&O Historical Society Company Store along with other B&O related items.
One the cover a Fairbanks Morse H10-44, Emerges from under the Air Rights Building in Bethesda, Maryland on its way to Georgetown in March 1971.
(Harold Buckley Jr. photograph)
