Shelf Construction
One of my pet peeves about double deck railroading was the exposed support systems on the upper deck. When I decided to go multiple deck I devised a plan to hide all support brackets from sight. The way this works by placing the shelf brackets above the shelf. The front of the the shelf board is supported by 10/24" all thread rod. The rear of the shelf board is screwed to the 2x4 that is attached to the wall. In the next few photo's you can see I have achieved my goal and the results are fantastic!

Excellent use of light/dark spaces. Fantastic.
ReplyDeleteReally nice, Kelly
ReplyDeleteI think I can see what you've done with the threaded rod but could you just give a little more detail please? From the photos, it looks like a short piece of threaded rod supports the lip of the metal bracket. If so, it's not clear to me what this adds to the support. Thanks.

I built a helix on the last railroad using the same method, threaded rods. It was very easy and worked like a charm! You have a great start to what will be a wonderful railroad!

OK I get it now. I looked a lot closer at the photos and read the text again of this post and a previous post. I'd be interested in knowing how you've fitted the threaded rod into the metal brackets though and what you've secured it with.

Sorry for the delay.
ReplyDeleteThe metal brackets are U shaped with pre drilled holes. I simply drop a 10/24 nut inside the U of the bracket and insert the screw through the pre drilled hole.
Hi Kelly,
ReplyDeleteWhat type of compact florescent lamps are you using? Do you know the color tempature of these?
By your photos you get a good spread of light over all.
Thanks;
Jeff
Jeff, The last batch I purchased was "Bright Affects" 13 Watt, Soft White, 2700 K. I purchased them a Lowe's Home Improvement Store in contractor packs. I think they were the least expensive ones.
